Drake Track and Field Stadium
Elvin C. "Ducky" Drake spent more than 50 years at UCLA
as a student, track coach and head trainer for all athletic teams.
One of the high points of his career was coaching both Rafer Johnson
and C.K. Yang for the Olympics. These UCLA alumni competed against
each other and took the gold and silver medals in the decathlon
at the 1960 Rome Olympics.
Easton Softball Stadium
UCLA alumnus James L. Easton, chairman, chief executive officer
and president of sporting goods manufacturer Jas. D. Easton Inc.,
donated $620,000 to rebuild the softball stadium. He also provided
equipment and financial support for a number of sports programs.
Morgan Athletics Center
J.D. Morgan led UCLA to 30 NCAA team championships during his 17
years as director of athletic programs. The J.D. Morgan Center is
home to the UCLA Athletic Hall of Fame, as well as athletic department
offices.
Pauley Pavilion
Edwin Wendell Pauley was a UC Regent for 32 years and principal
donor to the building fund that created Pauley Pavilion. Pauley
Pavilion is best known as the home of Bruin basketball, but it was
first used for commencement ceremonies in June 1965. During the
1984 Olympics, Pauley Pavilion was the venue for the gymnastics
competition.
Pauley, a Los Angeles oil executive and real estate developer, founded
Pauley Petroleum, Inc. In the late 1940s, he served as adviser to
the Secretary of State on economic affairs and as special assistant
to the Secretary of the Army.
Jackie Robinson Stadium
The Bruin baseball stadium (photo above), named for alumnus Jackie
Robinson, is located close to campus on Sawtelle Boulevard. Robinson
broke the color barrier when he joined the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947,
the first Black player in the major leagues.
Robinson was a four-sport letterman at UCLA, competing in football,
basketball, track, and baseball. A bronze statue of Robinson is
located near the concession stand on the concourse level.
Spaulding Field
William Spaulding came west in 1925 from the University of Minnesota
to become head football coach at what was then known as the University
of California, Southern Branch. He coached the Bruins through 1938.
The UCLA football team holds its on-campus practices on Spaulding
Field.
West Alumni Center
James E. West was a UCLA student in the 1940s. A generous donor,
he became an attorney and participated in numerous activities related
to and supporting of UCLA.
During the 1984 Olympic Games, the West Alumni Center served as
the athletes' entry-point to the UCLA portion of the Olympic Village.
Wooden Recreation and Sports Center
John Wooden, who coached the UCLA Bruins to 10 NCAA championships,
is the only person to be installed in the Basketball Hall of Fame
as both a player and coach. His philosphy of life is expressed in
his "Pyramid of Success."
