UCLA — An Economic Engine for Southern California

As one of the nation's top research universities, UCLA is an engine for real world advances in health care, education, science, commerce, popular culture, pure scholarship and community service that enrich our neighborhoods, our nation and our world on a daily basis.

In each issue of Impact we highlight many of the benefits that UCLA creates in our lives; one of the university's most important roles is serving as a powerful engine that drives the economy of Southern California.

· For every $1 taxpayers invest in UCLA, the university generates almost $15 in conomic activity, resulting in a $9.3 billion economic impact.

The very presence of UCLA in Los Angeles creates tangible economic benefits for the region — in jobs created, dollars spent and taxes paid. As the seventh largest employer in Southern California, UCLA is responsible, directly or indirectly, for 70,000 permanent jobs. Last year alone, UCLA-related economic activity generated business revenues of $9.3 billion in greater Los Angeles, $1.2 billion of which was paid in taxes by the University to local, state and federal government, helping to support vital public services.

The UCLA health care system brings billions of dollars into the regional economy each year while providing clinical care, research and teaching in Southern California and employing nearly 14,000 people.

And we can't overlook the intangible benefits that flow from UCLA's role as a wellspring of ideas, talent and intellectual property. Through groundbreaking research, UCLA faculty deliver practical results that can generate income and jobs for the regional economy. The university is also a source of future economic potential through the great talent pool of students we educate.

UCLA truly is a good investment.
