Elinor Ochs is a UCLA professor
of anthropology and applied linguistics. She is considered a
founder of the field of language socialization, the study of the
way people acquire language and are shaped by the culture around
them.
Ochs heads the UCLA/Sloan Center
on Everyday Lives of Families, whose research projects on family
life include a landmark three-year study of dual-income,
middle-class families in Los Angeles and how they balance work
and family. The center is supported by a grant from
the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.
With UC Berkeley's Professor Lisa Capps, Ochs is
the author of Constructing Panic, which describes how
family narratives affect the mental health of children. Ochs also
collaborated with Capps on Living Narrative:
Creating Lives in Everyday Storytelling.
