UCLA is a public research university, one of just 34 public universities
to attain membership in the prestigious Association of American
Universities (AAU).
For more than half a century, university-based research
has been key to America’s
prosperity. A robust system to spearhead scientific and medical
advances, to train the next generations of researchers and innovators,
and to create new knowledge is essential to the continuing economic
stability of our society.
UCLA serves as an engine for accelerating the
transfer of real world, real time advances in health care, education, science,
commerce and pure scholarship that enrich our community, our
nation and our world on a daily basis. Our size provides us with
the opportunity for intense collaboration in teaching and research
across an astounding range of disciplines, placing the university
among the nation’s leading research institutions. In 2003-’04,
the university
received $537.9 million in federal support for basic research.
UCLA has consistently ranked among the top 10 universities
