Los Angeles at a Crossroads - Our communities are facing serious challenges: the disappearance of the middle class, high drop-out rates and staggering numbers of people living homeless and in poverty.
In 2007, United Way of Greater Los Angeles adopted a ten-year plan with specific goals designed to tackle the root causes of poverty throughout the LA county. With your help, they are creating pathways out of poverty by focusing on three specific goals:
- Ensure all people have access to affordable housing and health care
- Help all students graduate from high school prepared for college and the workforce
- Provide all adults with the financial tools they need to thrive
Last year alone, the generous support of donors allowed United Way to:
Provide Basic Needs:
- Over 5,000 homeless families and individuals moved off the streets and into permanent housing
- 63,000 men, women and children received primary medical, mental and dental care
Improve Educational Achievement:
- More than 31,000 low-income youth got access to academic enrichment and after-school programs
- Over 3,000 parents were trained to be school and community leaders and more than 14,620 of them were galvanized to ensure their children's academic success
- School Principals were piloted to Watch Academy to help drive leadership at 18 disadvantage schools
Increase Financial Stability:
- More than 7,000 people increased their average monthly income by $2,249 with improved job readiness, literacy and training
- Over 37,000 working families received free tax preparation assistance, resulting in over $25 million in total tax refunds (EITC)
- More than $26 million in home equity was underwritten, with 100% of our homeowners never defaulting on their loans
