National Academy of Medicine

The National Academy of Medicine (NAM), was established in 1970 as the Institute of Medicine (IOM). It is one of the three academies that make up the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (the National Academies) in the United States.

There are more than 2,400 members of the NAM who have been elected, in recognition of their professional accomplishments and commitment to volunteer service. Each year, no more than 90 regular members and 10 international members are elected to the NAM. Membership represents the pinnacle of professional achievement and service commitment for those at the top of their fields.

Membership in the National Academy of Medicine

Nominations to the National Academy of Medicine begin with two NAM members familiar with the candidate's work making a confidential nomination. In proposing a nomination, the NAM member certifies that the candidate meets the NAM's primary criterion of excellence and outstanding professional achievement in a field relevant to its mission.
