Fire Kinship: Southern CA Native Ecology & Art
Before Southern California’s 18th-century colonization, Native communities used controlled burns to nurture ecosystems, promote healthy plant growth and reduce fuel loads. Fire Kinship challenges modern fear and stigma around fire, advocating a return to these traditional practices as essential to land care, community wellbeing and tribal sovereignty. The Fowler Museum at UCLA exhibition presents a living history that centers the expertise of Tongva, Cahuilla, Luiseño, and Kumeyaay communities.
